Chocolate Hummus (read: Edible Brownie Batter)

Brownie batter? Yes.

Brownie batter that’s free of raw egg, refined sugar, and guilt? HECK yes.

Okay, so this 3-ingredient chocolate hummus does not exactly bake into rich, fluffy, decadent bars like our beloved brownie, but it surely is reminiscent of the remains left on the spoon and mixing bowl after whipping up a batch. It makes the perfect dip to add to your holiday charcuterie board, only requires 3 ingredients, and is likely to please even the pickiest of guests at your party. (I know because I tested it on my ultra picky siblings, who happily scooped bite after bite).

3-Ingredient Chocolate Hummus

The first time I attempted a chickpea-infused dessert, the result was far from bliss. It was late winter in 2012, I was living in a shared flat in northern England with five other exchange students from around the world, and although our kitchen tools and materials were sparse, my cooking skills were just beginning to emerge. I found a chickpea cookie dough recipe on Pinterest that sounded like the perfect excuse to stall my studies for an hour.

Beans + Chocolate = Brain fuel. Right?

Ideally, yes! But the result was chunky and gritty, and completely inedible. Somewhere, somehow, things went badly awry between adding the chocolate chunks, garbanzo beans, maple syrup, and remaining ingredients to my food processor.

However, since the time of this unfortunate encounter, zesty foodies have been raving about their chickpea-infused desserts, and I decided it was time to give this creative twist on treatise another go. And I am SO glad I did! The result this time around was exactly the kind of bliss I imagined the first time around.

4th & Heart Chocti Ghee

When deciding what to mix with chickpeas to transform them into a sweet treat, I remembered that I had a jar of 4th & Heart Chocti Ghee waiting for me in the cupboard. This perfectly sweet, decadent, chocolatey spread smells and tastes exactly like frosting — but better — because the ingredients include: dates, cocoa, coconut sugar, and vanilla bean ghee.

The richness of the ghee perfectly masks the earthiness of the beans, making it a protein-rich treat that does the body good. Simple, nourishing, delicious!

3-Ingredient Chocolate Hummus

  • 1, 15.5-ounce can chickpeas

  • 2 Tbs. chickpea can liquid

  • 1/3 cup 4th & Heart chocti ghee

  • Optional toppings: shredded coconut, cacao nibs, flaky sea salt

  • Serving snacks: apple slices, pretzel thins, banana slices, seasonal berries, crackers

  1. Add chickpeas, chickpea can liquid, and ghee to a food processor or high speed blender. Process until completely smooth, stopping to scrape down the sides (or push contents down to the center using the temper if you’re using a blender.)

  2. Once the hummus is completely smooth or has reached your desired texture, transfer to your favorite small serving bowl, and sprinkle with toppings of choice. If making the hummus ahead of time, cover with food wrap or a lid and store in the refrigerator. Consume within 3 days.
