In case you haven't jumped on the Farmer's Market train yet, there's still time. Look here at a list of all farmer's markets held in San Diego County, and plan accordingly.
What would you buy at the Farmer's Market vs. Grocery Store?
Farmer's Market: anything in season.
Any and all greens (collards, kale, spinach, tomatoes...anything in Season) apples, avocados, lemons (there are tons of citrus trees in Southern California, so why buy imported lemons and oranges from another country? They're usually much cheaper at FM's too!) local raw honey, artisan bread, cheese, hummus, and eggs. OH! And Bitchin' Sauce, in any and every flavor.
Grocery Store: bulk and specialty items.
dried fruits, nuts, seeds, grains, (these are usually harder to find and more expensive at FM's) cereal, non-dairy milks (almond, flax, coconut), dark chocolate, spices,
Bonus! Here's a great SMOOTHIE RECIPE for anyone with a blender.
1 apple, cut away from the core
1 large handful of mixed greens (my favorite is a blend of Swiss chard, kale, and spinach)
2 Tbs. dry whole-grain, thick-cut rolled oats
3/4 cup unsweetened coconut milk
3/4 cup cold water
4 ice cubes
juice of 1 lemon
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1. Wash & chop produce. Add all ingredients to the blender.
2. BLEND until smooth and creamy.
3. Enjoy with a friend, or have it all to yourself :)
